Lana'i

Lana'i is called the Pineapple Isle.  At 141 square miles and only 47 miles of coastline, it is one of the smallest Islands you can visit. The population is around 3193 plus visitors.

The Island is a real garden spot with a rich culture.  It has had its problems over the years and gone through a series of owners.  At one time Dole owned just about everything, until the Hawaiian pineapple market dissolved  Now, it has a new owner, Larry Ellison of Oracle fame.  His vision is to make a technologically advance community that is designed for the people.  Probably the basis for the new developments is a desalinization plant to address the water needs of the Island.  With $47 billion at his disposal, Ellison, should be able to pull off this remake. Plans are, that there will be an airport on the Island that will be capable of handling direct flights from the Mainland.  Renovations are continuing on the two major Four Seasons managed resorts on the Island.

If all goes well, this should become a major tourist destination in the future.  But, for now, your best bet is to stay on Maui and Trilogy over to the Island for a visit to the beautiful Hulopo'e Bay for a great day of snorkeling or SNUBA.  Or, maybe, spend a day four-wheeling on the Munro Trail.
